Hello hello, Ben here.
I’ve never gone all-in on the whole New Year’s Resolution thing. I get that it’s the start of something new and that it’s a pretty good time to evaluate where you are and maybe update some goals. But resolutions often seem overly broad and not particularly exciting. Most are usually abandoned by February. It happens 80% of the time according to research - although instant kudos to you if you make it further into the year with yours.
Anyway, despite all that I’m talking about them because at the end of our last episode (14 Handbags and Gladrags: Industry awards) Mel and I set the goal / target / pipe dream of indie business club becoming an award winning podcast in 2025 (or ‘26…we’re moving the goalposts already).
Neither us really knew what goes into making a podcast award winning, so not wanting us to become one of the 80%, I’ve done a bit of research. According to the judges of British Podcast Awards, here’s some things they look for:
“Original, well-produced, compelling content which exploits the unique medium of podcasting and understands the audience it's trying to attract.”
Ok, well we know who we want to create this content for and we also know we have an engaged audience that’s along for the ride with us (that’s you, dear reader).
“Create the content that you've always wanted to hear, but which no one else has made.”
This is literally why we started the pod. We love those interview podcasts with familiar industry faces, but we wanted something a little different that we would love to listen to.
“The kind of audio you'd stay in your car to carry on listening to after reaching your destination.”
We actually had a listener miss a junction on the motorway because she was chuckling along with one of our earlier episodes. Probably at something I said.
“Make sure your audio quality and production values are high.”
Thank goodness Mel bought that snazzy new microphone at the end of last year. And we of course have the best in the biz on our team - our producer, theme composer and overall sound guy Ant Henderson.
“The number one quality I always listen out for is authenticity.”
Now this could be a problem. Authenticity is one of our most disliked words (although I reckon that in itself is an authentic viewpoint) and my wife, [REDACTED] actually told me to use a different word on the pod.
So there you go. Seems like we might have a shot.
Alt Marketing School
Friend of the show Fab Giovanetti is hosting Alt Marketing School’s Open Day on 16th January. There are 14 speakers including us. We’re talking about tone of voice and why it’s important for your brand and your business. Click the pic for tickets.
It’s an affiliate link so if you opt for the paid ticket for lifetime access to the talks, we get a few pennies. We also have a ko-fi page and all the proceeds from that go back into the podcast to help cover running costs. Thanks to everyone who’s supported the podcast, in any way.
Byeeeee,
Ben (& Mel)
