Hi, Ben here.
The next Barfield & McKinney is on Wednesday 6th March at 12 noon. Our topic is…
OVERSHARING
Do you ever worry about how much of yourself you share online?
I do. Unlike some, I actually worry I’m not sharing enough online.
Because I hardly share anything.
If you follow me on LinkedIn*, you’ll probably know I never mention my family, I accept no accountability to share what I’m up to at the weekend and I NEVER think to myself, “Oh, I should take a picture of this and share it on LinkedIn”.
For example, last week I met up with my Copy Or Die co-founder Dave in Manchester and we went to the launch event for a client we created the Tone Of Voice for. It was a great party, basically a club night. Free food, free bar (🤕), and a raucous live set by indie tunesters Everything Everything. Among the other guests were loads of “Influencers”.
Real life, in-the-flesh younguns. Released into the wild armed with top-of-range iPhones and these cumbersome looking light attachments. They were taking selfies and videos: you know, making those Tok-Tik thingies, presumably.
At no point did I think “Ben, get your phone out and take a photo of you, Dave, and your clients so you can promote your new business and show how cool and successful you are” [EDIT: Mel here. This is where Ben and I differ 🤣 I’d be all over it]
Nope.
I just stood around chatting and having a great time. Although I did feel a bit old compared to the rest of the folks there.
Anyway, I’ve digressed massively.
This week, Mel and I are talking live on LinkedIn about ‘Oversharing Online’. Because, when we can share anything online, what counts as oversharing?
After all, we’re online to connect with people aren’t we? And when we share bits of ourselves, connections happen.
But how much is too much? How much is not enough? How much is just right?
What are the benefits of being open and honest online? And what are the risks?
We’ll talk about all this and more, on Wednesday March 6th at 12 noon UK time.
Come along on your lunch hour.
Here’s the sesh again.

*normally this is where I should say “If not, why not??!” but tbh there’s not much reason to at the moment unless you like daft re-written lyrics to popular songs.
